The Volunteer Syndrome

Hey there I’m Scott Savoy at the Sterling Creations desk and welcome to the marvellous month of March.
Ah yes! Spring is almost here.
Today, I am delighted to share our president’s weekly editorial with you and for this week Donna J. Jodhan discusses the volunteer syndrome.
See what she thinks.
Happy weekend everyone.

The volunteer syndrome
By Donna J. Jodhan

I decided to write this editorial after reading a post on Facebook by one of my friends and I won’t reveal their name. It struck me that my friend had something very important to share and now I’ll share my opinion.

It appears that an old habit and artificial attitude continues to exist. This being that whenever someone with a disability steps up to the plate to volunteer, their offer is often viewed much differently than the one coming from a mainstream person. That is, it appears that too much of society still believes that a person with a disability needs to be taken care of instead of being a person who has something to offer.

I wonder out loud if this attitude is the cause of too many entities continuing to demand that the disability community should volunteer their services in return for no compensation? How do these two scenarios compare to each other?

Truth be told, I am at a bit of a loss to explain if anything, how these two scenarios are related or could be related.

On the one hand we are not being considered as volunteers whenever we volunteer our services and time! And on the other hand we are being asked to volunteer by all kinds of entities in return for no compensation.
I would be really interested to see what others think.

Just my two cents for today.
