We Need to Pack More Patience
by Donna J. Jodhan
In today’s fast-paced world, patience is becoming an increasingly rare commodity. People no longer read their emails as attentively as they once did, and listening—genuine, thoughtful listening—seems to be fading away. We live in a time where many only pay attention to what they deem important, filtering out anything that doesn’t immediately align with their own perspectives or priorities.
Moreover, as our world becomes more interconnected, cultures are blending in unprecedented ways. While this is a beautiful opportunity for growth and understanding, it also comes with challenges. One of the most significant hurdles is the language barrier, which can lead to misunderstandings, frustration, and missed connections. Communication across different languages and cultural contexts requires more than just words—it requires patience.
So, how can we pack more patience into our daily lives? First, we need to slow down. Take a moment to read that email carefully, to understand the full context before responding. When listening, truly focus on what the other person is saying, not just waiting for your turn to speak. Be open to learning from diverse cultures and languages, and recognize that understanding takes time.
Patience is a skill we can nurture, and it is crucial if we want to navigate this increasingly complex world with grace and empathy. In packing more patience, we can foster deeper connections, better communication, and ultimately, a more harmonious global community.
Just my two cents for today.
