The Missing Pieces – A Chronic Problem

Greetings everyone! I’m Christian Robicheau at the Sterling Creations desk. If you are into solving and building puzzles, then here’s the perfect editorial for you. Our president encourages you to find the missing pieces, and then send to her at info@sterlingcreations.ca. Happy weekend!

For lack of a better title, this is the one that I believe best expresses my growing concerns over a landscape where several companies continue to ignore the voices and needs of blind and vision-impaired Canadians.

First, we have a major bank that has totally ignored the requirements of WCAG. Their personal banking website lacks some of the most basic requirements. No level 1 heading, no alt text to describe graphics, and document title does not match page title. Additionally, they seem only prepared to pay lip service. They are more concerned that the customer is able to conduct online banking, but truth be told, this does not make any sense when the main page is not very functional and it is very difficult to find online banking. They are ignoring some basic requirements.

Next, we have some high-profile Canadian companies that are not engaging with blind and vision-impaired Canadians, and to add insult to injury, they are using external companies to develop and test their websites for accessibility. This is horrible and a darn shame.

Then we have federal departments whose online complaint forms are nowhere accessible to blind and vision-impaired Canadians. They continue to promise to fix this, but we are still waiting.

These are all the missing pieces, in my respectful opinion. What can we do?

Just my two cents for today!
