In 2020, Barrier Free Canada – Canada Sans Barriàres introduced the Chris Stark Distinguished Advocacy Award to honour the memory of the late Chris Stark, who passed on in June 2019.

Chris was one of the most dedicated, committed, and hard-working advocates, who worked tirelessly to encourage others to stand up for the rights of all Canadians with disabilities, especially for those with vision impairments. Our inaugural award was presented to Chris Stark posthumously and to his wife, Marie.

This award category recognizes individuals in our community who have demonstrated superior and outstanding advocacy over a period of ten years or more as a leader. The Chris Stark Distinguished Advocacy award is meant to recognize an individual who has furthered the standing of our rights in Canada through respectful leadership and activism.

Each year, this award will be given out to mark the landmark victory that Canadians with disabilities obtained on November 29, 2010, when the lower court of Canada mandated the Canadian government to make their websites accessible to all Canadians, especially so to Canadians with disabilities.

We will be putting out a call for nominations along with criteria for qualifying shortly after Labour Day.
