For May 2017:

How to make online courses more accessible

With the rapid evolution of technology and the very fast moving world of digital development it is becoming more and more important for online courses to be made accessible to everyone and if we keep this in mind and not panic whenever someone with a vision impairment or print disability makes a request for equal access to online materials you would be surprised to see how easy the entire proccess of accessibility really is.

I have a few tips to get you started.

  1. Your website's content must be easy to read and understand and written in plain, simple, but affective language.
  2. Your website must be easy to navigate; to easily find sought after materials, to have links that are named with meaningful and descriptive names, and forms that are easy to complete independently.
  3. Course materials need to be easy to download; in accessible PDF, Word, or text formats. With the rapid development of ePub formats, this too should be included in your online facilities.
  4. Online course materials should be easy to navigate independently.
  5. Technical support should be readily available and staff appropriately train to respond to questions from those who use access technology.
  6. Taking exams online must be made accessible to students with special needs.
  7. Chat lines, audios, and videos must also be made accessible. Videos must be tagged with captioning and descriptive video.

These are just but a few requirements but enough to get you started.

Good luck!
