For November 2014:

How to make a clothes closet more accessible

Believe it or not, this is often one of the most asked questions that I get asked. Especially so by those who have lost their vision later in life or friends and families of those who fall into this group. I don't think that there is any fast and hard answer to this but I do have a few pointers to share coming from someone who has been on both sides of the fence. So here goes.

  1. You could either choose to organize your closet by type of garment; Blouses on one side, sweaters and cardigans the same, slacks and trousers the same. Then you could do the same for skirts, jackets and suits and anything else.
  2. You can choose to organize your closet by classification. That is, casual clothes to one side and business clothes to the other side and going out clothes to another side.
  3. By color but I would not always recommend this. However you can organize by color within other categories. That is color within blouses, skirts, jackets, and so on.
  4. The aim of the game is for you to organize your closet in a way that you can find what you seek easily and without having to ask for sighted assistance. Most important of all the trick of the game is for you to be able to remember easily. That is, where you have placed things and maybe the best way is to find some sort of logic that will be easy for you to remember.
