For June 2014:

How to make apps more accessible

We are living in a world where apps are continuing to make a huge difference in our lives and many may agree that apps have now become kings of knowledge! This being said however, there is still a very long way to go when it comes to making them accessible to everyone.

True it is that apps are extremely affordable but we need to ensure that they are also usable and for blind persons it is extremely important that they are able to use them as effectively as the mainstream user. So here are a few points from me and hopefully it will help.

Apps need to be simple to use and easy to navigate. This means that it should be easy to find headings, buttons, and that words are descriptive enough to enable the user to quickly understand what they need to do, where they need to go in order to get what they want but above all! The app should do what it is supposed to do!

Blind users and surfers are becoming more dependent on apps and if an app developer keeps this in mind then it would be easy enough to see that benefits to blind users are also benefits to so many others; to those who did not grow up with technology and to everyone else!

App developers need to ensure that simplicity and efficiency are the order of the day and that they can continue to produce apps that help those with special needs and those with disabilities to improve their quality of life and to deal with every day challenges.

Test, and make sure that your testing team includes persons from those consumer groups who you are targeting.
